Empresa das Lousas de Valongo, SA was established in 1865 to supply the UK and USA with roofing slate, tiles for paving and cladding, dampcourse and biliard tables.
Nowadays, the main productions are the slabs and tiles cleft, sawn or honed althougt the production of finished products keeps going on.
Our slate comes from our own quarry, in the Valongo area. The slate is an homogeneous bluish-grey slate, almost clean of any ferrous minerals.
The main markets are Germany ( Porto Schiefer ), UK ( Valongo Slate or Porto Slate ), France ( Ardoise de Valongo or Ardoise de Porto ), United States, Spain ( Pizarra de Valongo ), Denmark, Japan and Australia.
In the last years, the ELV accomplished big investments in the extraction and production areas:

- In the extraction area, ELV opened the biggest slate open cast quarry in Portugal, the quarry of Milhária, being the works almost completely mechanized;
- In the production area, the investment were mainly for improving finished products; ELV purchased a semiautomatic assembly line for the tiles production, machines specially to calibrate thicknesses and a department prepared to produce with the best quality billiard slates.

Owner of more than 100 ha in the Valongo slate area, the ELV has very large raw material reserves.
The actual production capability is 200 000 sqm/year, being 90% to export. Although home market only consumes a small part, it has been increasing.
The main markets are Germany, UK, Denmark, Spain, USA, Japan and Australia.
