Quinta do Mondego is located in Dão, one of the most important wine regions in Portugal and is a Family Owned State.
In 1994 Maria Fontes da Cunha and her husband Joaquim bought the QUINTA DO MONDEGO. Maria is a math teacher and Joaquim an economist and they bought the Quinta do Mondego to have an idealic place where they and the 2 children could escape from the city and receive family and friends, rest from the busy lifes.
So, in 1994 QUINTA DO MONDEGO was one hectare of land. The ideal setting made the family fall in love, the river, the strem, the house, the old mill, the vineyards and the tranquility made they completely in love. From rebuilding the old house to rearrange the old vineyards was very fast. After that, the family started getting more passion for the Dão region and the wines. Planting more and more became the project, almost one vineyard per year since that time.
In 2004 the daughter Joana started living at QUINTA DO MONDEGO and this became also her life project. She is in charge of the vineyards and the wines. MUNDA touriga nacional 2004 was the first wine.
After buying peace by peace, now QUINTA DO MONDEGOS is 70 hectares (20 hectares of vineyards) on the margin of the biggest Portuguese river – river Mondego. This family project is joining together what used to be all together from the same family.more than 100 years ago.
In this 20 hectares of vineyards Quinta do Mondego works only with Portuguese and typical wine varieties from Dão - Touriga Nacional, considered the best Portuguese grape represents 60% of the propriety. Also have 15% of Encruzado, the most important white wine variety of the region. Beside this 2 grapes: Tinta Roriz, Jaen, alfrocheiro and Baga in the reds and gouveio in the whites.
QUINTA DO MONDEGO started producing wines in 2003, and MUNDA was the first wine of Quinta do Mondego in the market. MUNDA was the Latin name given to the Mondego River and means clarity, purity and transparency. This meaning embrasis the philosophy of doing wines - pure and clean terroir wines. With good grapes and good oak Joana´s job will be easier.
Now we produce 3 different brands : MUNDA , QUINTA DO MONDEGO and MONDECO - all white and red wines.
