Situated in the North of Portugal, the region of Trás-os-Montes reveals itself amidst hills and steep valleys in a wide extension. This is a unique region with special characteristics. Across the region, the scenery changes rapidly in the heart of lush green valleys, ancient hillsides covered by a patchwork of woods, green-grey olive groves, extensive green vineyards, blossom and other fruit trees. The growing of vines and wine production in the region of Trás-os-Montes has a centuries-old origin, therefore inherently marked on its rocks, since throughout the region there are several "lagares" digged into the rocks of roman and pre-roman origin.
Montalegre (T/M) has its old vineyards with centenarian grape variety at a 650 to 750 metres above sea level with a ‘small plot’ vineyard at 1000 meters where the wine stages. This house used to be Francisco Gonçalves's parents, ‘Avó Chiquinha’, where he was born. Francisco studied at the UTAD - University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. Here he began his dedication to the studies of the vine and wine, and started the discovery of better techniques to express the unique notes of each grape variety. Throughout his career, he was responsible for the creation and development of numerous award-winning wines from the regions of Douro, Rias Bajas and Ribeira Del Douro.
