AB - VALLEY WINES, LDA
AB Valley Wines is located near Amarante city, in the Amarante Vinhos Verdes sub-region, which is considered the cradle of Vinhos Verdes, where the terroir is ideal for the development of grape varieties such as Avesso, Arinto, Azal, in the white wine grapes, or Espadeiro and Vinhão, in the red wine grapes, because of the rich soil and the higher altitude, which offers a protection against the influence of the Atlantic Sea.
The result is a more matured grape, a good acidity and a higher alcohol level.
This terroir, along side with those grape varieties, allow experiments so unique and diverse that many winemakers settle their roots in this part of the region in order to be able to work and innovate their wines.
There has been many years that António Sousa, a multi award-winning oenologist of the region, work with this terroir and those grape varieties, understanding what they need to flourish, what they could offer and how could they produce excellent wines.
Was, for a long time, his wish to have a place where he could experiment, test and produce different wines, perform a different work, have a different autonomy, and level up his passion.
Bernardo Lencastre, an enthusiastic and passionate wine-lover and wine producer from Penafiel, near Amarante, and a long-time friend of António, always dreamed of having a cellar, where he could make, stored and bottled his wine, and therefore extend his work, his passion.
Both, realized that they could take advantage of this rich terroir and own a cellar by joining their efforts, enable them to be firstly more independent, and secondly, where every experiment could be possible and real.
Thus, Bernardo and António idealized a place where all these things could happen and where they could produce, on one hand, fresh, young and very aromatic wines, and on the other, aged, serious, robust and very gastronomical wines, capable of making the most skeptical person nurturing feelings for the wine and region.
And so, AB Valley Wines was born. The concept “experience”, brought by Antonio, took control of the souls and passion of each one of us, as if we all drank a delicious and aromatic wine that was made just for the occasion, an only one, not a special one, an “experience” one. So, our first experience was building a new cellar where every single detail was taken in consideration.
Our wines, called “Opção”, personify these concepts and they are the result of Antonio’s experiences. Thus, 5 different paths were followed:
Opção - A(romatics), is a young, fresh, irreverent and very aromatic wine, perfect to refresh your senses and to question your soul. The A(romatic) series has 4 monovarietal white wines (Alvarinho, Avesso, Arinto and Azal), 1 rosé wine (a blend of Espadeiro and Touriga Nacional) and 1 white wine blend, Superior (composed by Loureiro and Alvarinho grapes)
Opção - B(arrels) is an aged, complex, robust and very gastronomical wine, perfect to redefine the word memorable. The Barrels series has 1 monovarietal white wine (Avesso) and 1 red wine Superior (with Touriga Nacional and Vinhão).
Opção - C(olheita Tardia - Late Harvest) is a 100% Alvarinho sweet wine with an excelent acidity and produced organically via Botrytis Fungus.
Opção - D(evaneios - daydreams) is the excentricity of António, where wines like a white Vinhão (Vinhão is a red grape transformed in a white wine) have an opportunity to exist.
Opção - E(xperiências - Experiences) where Avesso sparking or Azal aged in barrels are some examples of what this path could offer.
