Spread over 100 hectares e re-organized in 1973, Casa de Vila Boa has today about 30 hectares of vine, with the typical castes of the region: Trajadura, Pedernã, Avesso, Vinhão,Borraçal and also Alvarinho and Touriga Nacional. Vila Boa de Quires was named by Portuguese first King, D. Afonso Henriques since he tought this region produce excelent wine. Years after, Vila Boa de Quires was given to Casa de Bragança in the wedding of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira’s daughter with D. Afonso, D. João I’s son. Located in Vila Boa de Quires, in Marco de Canavezes, Casa de Vila Boa is one of the most imponent manor-houses in the region. With an austere front and a beautiful tower which gives an aspect of a fortress, the house of Albuquerque de Vasconcelos Lencastre’s family is from the 14th Century comproved by several documents of that age. Always in the hands of the same family, it has an impressive example of the baroque period: a façade of an unfinished manor-house built in the meddile of the 17th century by António de Vasconcelos Carvalho e Menezes.
The COLINAS do DOURO project was created in the heart of the International Douro Nature Park, at an elevation of 640 metres.
This 450ha farm (quinta), with 106ha of vineyards, is situated at the abrupt transition between the Beira granite plateau and the first folds of schist of the Douro valley, surrounded by crags and escarpments.
With a vision of creating wines that transmit the unique character of the “UM DOURO SUPERIOR”, we devote ourselves intensely and genuinely to our work, from sunrise to sunset, harvest after harvest.
Respecting and enhancing the incredibly rich local biodiversity, we want our wines to express, in their elegance, freshness and minerality, the essence of the “UM DOURO SUPERIOR” that we are proud to call our terroi
Bairrada and Pato
A love history!
For centuries the Pato family has been involved in wine business in the Bairrada region. Luis ancestors started to put Bairrada on the map. e uncle of Luis’s grandfather, Mario Pato was one of the first oenologues teaching winemaking in Portugal. e wine is running in the veins in Pato family.
In a former century Luis was one of the first pioneers to go and sellhis wines abroad. More than 30 years ago he went off with a suitcase full of bottles of Baga, Bical and other indigenous grape varieties from his well beloved vineyards in the Bairrada region.
Open minded sommeliers, importers and wine aficionados were blown away through these terroir driven wines from an unknow region with even more unknown grape varieties! The expression Luis was giving to his wines was a real reflection of his region of birth: fresh (thanks to the Atlantic influence), creamy, fruitdriven (chalky clay soil, midslopes of the small hills around Óis do Bairro), elegant and delicate (oak aging/fermenting used as balanced seasoning in a soup) with big aging potential.
He was like a single rebel putting a single handed revolution in a sleeping region – at that time unaware of its complexity and potential.
The future for Baga and Bical and the other indigenous suspects from Bairrada looks assured! The patrimonium of old vines will be maintained and probably even improved. Luis’s perseverance and determination will be respected! The Rebel’s spirit will go on!
The wine was born in the 70’s, out of the unbreakable will of José Rodrigues – most known as Uncle Zé – that, full of faith in the land, gave Monte Barbo strenght in every single vine he planted, took care and watched growing.
The richness of the soils, the thorough selection of grapes and castes as well as the techniques that combine tradition with innovation, give rise to a wine full of personalitiy that overcame probabilities, prejudices, limitations and frontiers.
40 years, many many liters and acres later, the production increased and so did the desire and need to professionalize it, although keeping it small and selected. Uncle Zé’s intuition crossed generations and his devotion inspired the family, that today, with pride, sees the wine conquer land, strenght and several awards.
And so Monte Barbo fulfills its destiny, giving a taste if its excellence from mouth to mouth, taking a deeper Portugal further to new parts of the country and the world in each bottle of white, red or reserve that unveils all the quality, dedication and soul with which it is crafted.

The estate Quinta da Lagoalva is part of a region of unique natural beauty extended in the south bank of the river Tagus. It is located approximately 2kms from the town of Alpiarça and 11km from the city of Santarém.
In 1834, Quinta da Lagoalva was bought by Henrique Teixeira de Sampayo, the first Earl of Póvoa. In 1841-42 the land was inherited by his daughter Maria Luisa Noronha de Sampaio, who married Domingos António Maria Pedro de Souza e Holstein, the second Duke of Palmela. As such, in 1846 the estate entered into the house of Palmela.
Since then and throughout generations these lands have been in the Palmela family and nowadays belong to the company Sociedade Agrícola Quinta da Lagoalva de Cima, S.A.
The long tradition of Quinta da Lagoalva as a wine producer was certified in 1888, in the Portuguese Industry Exhibition, in which was represented by 600 wooden casks.
The 45 ha of vineyards of Quinta da Lagoalva are located in the best “terroirs” of the Ribatejo region and comprise both national and international varieties of grapes with the best characteristics to produce excellent wines. Sauvignon Blanc, Alvarinho, Arinto, Fernão Pires, Verdelho, Chardonnay are used in the production of white wines, while Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Roriz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shyrah, Tannat and Castelão are essential to the production of red wines.
The vines of Quinta da Lagoalva benefit from a modern system of production such as the wine cellar, that combines an effective winemaking process with a great versatility of oenological techniques, based on a constant dialogue between the “new world” model and traditional European methods.
Therefore the wines of Quinta da Lagoalva are the result of a special combination between the unique philosophy of the producer and grape varieties with a distinctive personality due to the microclimate and the “terroir” of the region.
Quinta do Gradil is located on the western foothills of the Serra de Montejunto, in the transition between the area of the humid winds from the Atlantic and the permanent winds from the West, and the region of dry summers.
The Lisbon region, formerly called Estremadura, stands out among wine-producing regions for its complexity and diversity in several areas: geology, climate and type of vegetation. It is a land of dispersion and plurality, and is often referred to as the land where paradoxes thrive.
Quinta do Gradil, considered as one of the oldest estates, if not the oldest one, part of Cadaval Municipality, has a secular historical background and forms a significant architectural landmark. Quinta was acquired by the Marquis of Pombal, on the occasion of the movement that, from 1760, led to the occupation of municipal lands. It is established that it was already involved in the cultivation of vineyards at the time, a fact that must have been the decisive factor for the statesman responsible for the creation of the Companhia das Vinhas do Alto Douro, the Douro wine producing company. It continued as a possession of the family until the middle of the 20th century, when it was bought by Sampaio de Oliveira. Then, at the end of the 1990s, the current owner, Luís Vieira, acquired this estate.
Mel Santa Maria took the first steps with the emergence of a swarm in the house of Quinta do Paranho in Santa Maria de Emeres, Chaves, in 1995. After entering a hive, the work of the swarm was followed weekly with many hours of observation.
