Adega Belém - A winery in the heart of Lisbon
Adega Belém is a small boutique winery located inside a former car repair shop in Lisbon’s Belém neighborhood. The winery specializes in low intervention premium wines made from native Iberian varietals in batches of 500-2500 bottles. We champion a dogma free, oenologically sophisticated art craft approach and wines with strong character and a definite deliciousness factor.
Catarina
Native of Carcavelos, northwest of Lisbon, Catarina was an evolutionary biologist before becoming a winemaker. Studying the Iberian tree frog, she found that females usually mate with males who call in the local frog dialect, though some choose foreign males, creating rare mixed pairs that bring genetic and social innovation. Inspired by this metaphor, the tree frog became our totem and logo, symbolizing how embracing differences sparks new ways of living, loving, and making wine.
David
A native of Frankfurt am Main, Germany, David had an international academic career in social anthropology before becoming a winemaker, with research and teaching posts across Europe, Africa, Australia, and the United States. His work explored culturally embedded relations to otherness. He studied how societies empower themselves by symbolically and materially incorporating distant islands, imagined pasts, seductive foreigners, images of nature, and even wine.
